Chapter 11
Bonnie hummed happily along. Whatever the problem was it had been fixed. Her parents had offered to pay so Stephanie wasnât even sure what had been wrong or how much it had cost to fix. Probably more than the old car was worth.
It had been three days since that day in the field when sheâd given herself to Colby. Stephanie longed to stay but she wouldnât humiliate herself by begging. She wasnât going to call Colby or go over to his house. She knew there were things they should say to each other but she couldnât bring herself to face him again. Sheâd meant to leave him with a day of pleasure that would haunt him forever. It turned out it was she who would long remember it.
She wanted to tell Colby she forgave him, or at least she understood why he had cheated at his stag. She didnât want to absolve him because she should have known better than to get so drunk in the first place but she supposed that was what people did at stags. Her brother played a large role in getting him there. She couldnât bring herself to hate Josh, though she was angry with him. She felt as though sheâd lost the last two years of her life to hatred and bitterness. She wasnât going to lose anymore.
Even if she forgave Colby did they have a future together? Likely not. She had changed and he now had money. They were both different people. Though their bodies still fit together in perfect harmony Stephanie knew that didnât mean that the rest of their lives would.
She blinked back sudden tears when she realized that she was a couple miles away from Colbyâs ranch. How easy would it be to stop in there and just say goodbye? No. She couldnât. Sheâd been debating with herself for three days and had decided it was better that she didnât, for both of them. She could send him a letter. She still knew his address. She would tell him she forgave him in writing. It would be easier than having to face him and say goodbye all over again.
There was something on the road up ahead. Stephanie wrinkled her brow in confusion. It was large. Some animal? She drew nearer and realized it was a vehicle. A shiny red half ton sheâd never seen before. It was parked horizontally across the road, blocking it.
Bringing her car to a standstill, Stephanie eyed the truck in confusion and worry. She didnât like traveling the backroads in the first place but they shaved almost an hour off taking the paved highway. She put Bonnie in park, then checked that all the doors were locked.
She was just turning her attention back to the road when she saw a tall, broad man get of his truck.
Colby.
Stephanieâs heart hammered in her chest at the mere sight of him. Her pulse spend up painfully and her palms started to sweat. She hadnât realized she was gripping her steering wheel so tight.
